Cold weather keeps furnace repairmen busy

The bitter cold temperatures are keeping people in the furnace repair business busy.

WSBT talked with two different heating companies, Sun Services and Great Lakes Heating and Air Conditioning. Both have responded to more than a hundred calls from people needing furnace repairs over the past couple of days..

Byron Paulus didn’t exactly wake up in comfort this morning.

“It was down to the lower sixties… so it was cold,” he said.

Paulus immediately checked his furnace and saw it wasn’t working.

“I don’t know there’s ever a good time for the furnace to go out, but certainly not when wind chills are hovering around 30 degrees below zero,” he said.

And it’s those cold temps that are causing a lot of furnace problems…

“Say a part is getting really close to failing…if that furnace runs almost 24 hours a day just to keep up temperature in the house, it’s adding stress or runtime to that part that was very close to failing therefore it’s gonna fail on a day like today,” said James Oleson, a service technician with Great Lakes Heating and Air Conditioning.

Oleson says their call volume has doubled over the last couple days.

“On days when you get hit like that every technician works until we’re done,” he said with a smile.

It’s work that makes a big difference for people like Paulus. A repairman got his furnace up and running in a few hours.

“It was a big relief for my wife and me,” Paulus said.

So they won’t wake up in the cold Wednesday morning.

There are a few things you can do to keep your furnace from breaking down. Oleson suggests having your furnace inspected annually and checking your filter once a month to make sure it’s not plugged up.
